Drawing on his extensive experience at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, as well as his experience as a consultant in the field of occupational and environmental medicine, Dr. Mitchell has created the essential reference guide for those who need to manage or be familiar with the medical surveillance of workers. As its title conveys, the guide provides instant access to the essential components of preplacement and periodic medical surveillance for workplace exposures.

Organized for rapid and easy access, Instant Medical Surveillance provides the latest information on medical surveillance for chemical and other toxic substances, infectious and allergenic agents, and physical hazards found in the workplace. The book's user-friendly organization helps readers quickly find the critical information they need. The guide is organized into eight sections:

I. Overview of Medical Surveillance
II. Federally Mandated Surveillance
III. Other Chemicals and Substances
IV. Department of Transportation (DOT) Driver Surveillance
V. Drug Testing
VI. Infectious and Allergenic Exposures
VII. Physical Hazards
VIII. Special Topics

Within each section, specific exposures (e.g., beryllium, cadmium, acrolein, lead, blood-borne pathogens, noise, sulfur dioxide) are in alphabetical order for quick location. For each discussion of a particular exposure, there is a standardized format that succinctly describes the toxicology, adverse health effects and established exposure limits, followed by the details of preplacement and periodic medical surveillance. In addition to the sections on important workplace exposures, there are special sections on DOT driver surveillance and drug testing.

The last section of the guide includes a variety of special topics, including back problems, the doctor-patient relationship, the diagnosis of difficult medical conditions, cluster investigations, environmental medicine, hazardous waste, multiple chemical sensitivity, and even agents of terrorism. An appendix listing the websites for required OSHA forms for important exposures covered in Section II, Federally Mandated Surveillance, is provided at the end of the book.

Throughout, Instant Medical Surveillance presents the essential information in a way that is easy to understand, not only for those who are trained in medicine, nursing, or industrial hygiene, but also for other professionals such as human resources personnel and attorneys.
