You have a short time to read and evaluate a journal article in an area that's vital to your practice, yet is filled with terminology you haven't come across before, haven't used in years, or is only vaguely familiar. What's the most efficient way to accomplish the task? Turn to Judith Green-McKenzie's time-saving guide. It offers a step-by-step approach to dissecting an article, a glossary of commonly used terms, methods for evaluating the validity of the results presented, and much more.

As Associate Director of Occupational Medicine Residency, Judith Green-McKenzie saw the need for a glossary and guide that could help busy residents and other professionals understand and evaluate professional journal articles in the limited time their schedules allowed. At the start of each residency class she outlined the basic elements of a research study -- the study hypothesis or research question, study design, statistical analysis, and findings -- as well as how to assess the internal and external validity of the results. She also provided a glossary of commonly used terms. Many residents indicated that they used her materials not only during their residency but also later in their professional life.

Now all medical professionals can benefit from Dr. Green-McKenzie's work, carefully organized into a concise, up-to-the-minute guide to understanding and evaluating medical journal articles.

Compelling reasons to add this book to your professional library:

• Easy-to-follow outline shows you how to dissect an article step by step. The outline facilitates understanding the elements of any journal article and evaluating the validity of the study findings.

• Organized for easy reference. Two easy-to-use sections explain how to evaluate an article (Section A) and provide meanings of commonly-used terms (Section B). A reference list suggests textbooks providing more detailed information.

• Includes a compact glossary. Section B provides definitions of epidemiology and biostatics terms commonly used in journal articles.

• Ideal for professionals with limited time for reading. The book makes it easy to read and evaluate a journal article in one sitting without having to consult multiple sources for definitions.

• Helps you stay up to date. New statistical methods are constantly introduced into the medical literature and articles are using increasingly sophisticated methods. The book's dual approach makes it easier to understand the terminology and evaluate the research methods.

• Improves critical review skills. Residency governing bodies are placing greater emphasis on residents' ability to interpret the literature and conduct research -- tasks enhanced by the methods and glossary provided here.

• Helps you identify what's useful to your practice. The material on evaluating results helps you decide for yourself if the author's conclusions are valid and appropriate to add to your practice or pass on to others.
